Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced that a joint committee will soon be set up to make the Yamuna River clean and pure, similar to efforts taken for the Ganga. The committee will include senior officials from the Central Water Commission (CWC), Haryana Government, and Delhi Government. It will not only focus on cleaning the river but also address other related issues.
Saini was speaking to mediapersons after attending a meeting on "Inter-State Coordination Related to Yamuna Water Rejuvenation," chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil at Shramik Shakti Bhavan in New Delhi.
He said since the formation of the Delhi Government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, development plans are being prepared and implemented at a fast pace. He added that the work of cleaning the Yamuna was being carried out on a war footing. Drains are being connected to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) so that sewage water is treated before being released into the river, and this process has been accelerated.
According to Saini, 16,000 metric tonnes of garbage has already been removed from the Yamuna under the ongoing campaign. He said the goal was to make the river clean and pure in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. The rejuvenation of the Yamuna is a top priority for both governments, he assured, and people will soon see visible improvements.

The CM shared that the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) level of the drain entering the Yamuna from Palla village in Karnal is currently 80, and steps are being taken to further purify this water. He noted that the BOD level of Yamuna water at Okhla in Faridabad has already improved. At present, 44 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are treating about 620 MLD of water every day, and nine more plants are being built to treat an additional 510 MLD of water.
Saini stressed that water and environmental issues know no boundaries, so Delhi and Haryana must work together to make the Yamuna clean. Strict measures have been ordered to stop the direct release of polluted water into the river. He said experts and representatives from both states would help monitor Najafgarh Lake and drain, while water discharged from industries in Haryana would also be regularly tested for BOD levels.
The Chief Minister also strongly condemned the attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta.
