The sacred Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been put on hold for now due to falling stones and debris in the Munkatia Sliding Zone near Sonprayag, Uttarakhand.
According to the Rudraprayag police, the route has become unsafe, and the pilgrimage will resume only after the path is cleared by the administration.
"The road is blocked due to debris and stones falling in the Munkatia Sliding Zone under the Sonprayag area. The Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been temporarily halted for now. The Yatra will resume once the road is cleared", the Rudraprayag police stated this in their 'X' post.
This temporary suspension comes even as the Char Dham Yatra continues to draw thousands of devotees. The annual pilgrimage to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri is among the most significant journeys in Hinduism.
The state government has undertaken a series of infrastructure upgrades in recent years--including improved roads, helicopter services, and better accommodation--to ensure a safer and smoother pilgrimage experience for devotees.
Despite recent improvements in roads, helicopter services, and accommodations by the state government to ensure safer, nature remains unpredictable in the high Himalayas. However, this year’s Kedarnath Yatra has witnessed a record number of pilgrims.
To ensure safety, the authorities have deployed additional security personnel and medical teams.
Located at the height of over 11,000 feet, the Kedarnath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Kedarnath Yatra doors for the year 2025 were opened for devotees on May 2.
