Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has launched a revamped version of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS). The new system is designed to significantly reduce response times for emergency services. Vijayan unveiled the upgraded system at the police headquarters on Friday.
The new ERSS is a next-generation platform. It allows people to contact police, ambulance, and fire services by dialling 112. According to a statement, the upgrade aims to improve service availability. It will also ensure faster responses through technology. Officials believe it can cut response times by about three minutes.
The revamped system has several new features. People can now register complaints via WhatsApp and web requests. Chatbots are also available for assistance. The system uses location-based services (LBS) and emergency location services (ELS). This allows it to pinpoint a caller’s real-time location. All police vehicles have been equipped with tablets, mobile phones, and GPS. This ensures seamless communication.

Furthermore, Internet of Things (IoT) security devices have been integrated. These devices are designed to alert others in emergencies. They enable rapid assistance. Calls to 112 from anywhere in Kerala are now routed to a centralised control centre. This centre directs the nearest police vehicle to the caller's location. The service can also be accessed via the SOS button on the official police mobile app, Pol App.
