Search and rescue operations continued on Day 5 to trace and rescue the missing 82 people in the Kishtwar cloudburst tragedy that swept away hundreds of pilgrims on Thursday.

A total of 75 patients have been admitted to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Kishtwar. One of them succumbed to injuries, while four remain in critical condition.

Further, 11 bodies and one body part were brought to the hospital mortuary from the cloudburst-hit Chositi village.

The cloudburst hit Chositi, the last motorable village en route to Machail Mata Temple, on August 14, leaving 65 dead and over 100 more injured, and over 82 missing.

According to official data, the GMC operated on 24 of the 75 patients. One of them, Ashok Kumar (35) of the Vijaypur area in Samba district, died on August 16.

Out of the patients admitted, 54 are adults and 21 are minors, while the highest number, 50 patients, are from Jammu. Followed by six each from Samba, Kishtwar and Udhampur; three from Reasi district; and one from Doda, besides two from Uttar Pradesh; and one from Chandigarh.

GMC Principal Ashutosh Gupta said, “Without losing even a minute, the porters and helpers took the patient trolleys to the triage room where the medical teams immediately started providing treatment. There was no time to lose; split-second decisions were taken.”

The Principal added, “The GMC team ensured that there was no need to refer even a single patient to any other higher institute for want of medical expertise. There were many patients who were covered in dust and mud in addition to their injuries. The nursing staff made commendable efforts to clean them up, provide clean clothes, dress their wounds, and gave them emotional support.”
