Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be completed within the next six months, with a newly elected board set to be in place by December 7.
The announcement came during a special event attended by councillors from all 144 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, where the Chief Minister outlined the government’s roadmap for civic administration and development.
Addressing the gathering, Adhikari emphasised the need to rise above political divisions, stating that there should be no distinction between “this side” or “that side” when it comes to development and public service. He expressed pride in addressing a forum that included representatives from across party lines.
Several prominent figures, including former Mayor Firhad Hakim, rebel TMC MP Mala Roy, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee, TMC councillors Ananya Banerjee, and Debasish Kumar, were present at the event. The Chief Minister thanked them for their participation and urged all stakeholders to work collectively for the betterment of the city.

Referring to the recent administrative situation at the KMC, Adhikari recalled that the government had to appoint an administrator following the resignation of the former Mayor to ensure continuity of civic services. However, he clarified that the arrangement was temporary and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring an elected municipal body within a fixed timeline.
Calling for collaborative governance, the Chief Minister said, “We have all gathered here today in support of development. There can be no separate factions or parties when it comes to development; we are all on the same side. I am nothing on my own—together, we will work for the people of Kolkata.”
Adhikari also highlighted the need to restore Kolkata’s past glory, recalling its legacy as the cultural capital of the country. He pledged that his government would work towards reviving the city’s stature and taking it to new heights.
