Kochi’s cyber police have successfully recovered over ₹1 crore stolen from an 81-year-old man who became a victim of a highly sophisticated "digital arrest" scam. The elderly man was cheated of around 1.30 crore rupees in November last year after he was threatened by impostors who accused him of illegal activities and coerced him into making a huge payment to "clear his name."
The police achieved this after conducting a quick investigation on this case filed at the Kochi City Cyber Crime Police Station. After being informed of this crime, they quickly uploaded this information to the National Cyber Crime Portal to trace the stolen amount to a bank account in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Thanks to this swift technical intervention, the police managed to freeze 1,06,27,914 rupees before the criminals could siphon it off.
Under the direction of Deputy Commissioner KS Shahansha and supervised by Assistant Commissioner Anilkumar, a dedicated team — including Inspector Shemir Khan and ASI Girish Kumar — secured the necessary court orders to return the frozen funds to the complainant.
The police have used this success as a reminder to the public that time is the most critical factor in cybercrime cases. They emphasised that if victims report a loss immediately through the national portal, the chances of intercepting and recovering stolen money increase dramatically. In this instance, that "golden hour" response proved to be the difference between a total loss and the recovery of a lifetime's savings.
