The young woman who was raped at a government law college in Kasba earlier this year has decided to start afresh by continuing her studies at a new institution. Traumatised by the June 25 incident, the survivor has chosen not to return to her former college and has instead enrolled in a private law college in Kolkata to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer.
According to family sources, the student completed her admission process last week, with second-year classes scheduled to begin after the ongoing festive season. Her father said that although his daughter had initially earned a place in a government law college, the circumstances made it impossible for her to return.
“If she went back to that college, she would have been mentally unprepared. Starting anew in a different environment was the only way forward,” said the father, adding, “We decided to admit her to a private college for the sake of her mental health and academic progress.”
The transfer required special permission from Calcutta University, which oversees both institutions. The victim’s father confirmed that the university extended full cooperation, even arranging for the student to sit for her first-year exams separately soon after the incident.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Shanta Dutta De stated, “Her admission to the new college has been completed with university approval. I have personally met her and assured her of all possible support to continue her studies without difficulty.”
The shocking crime occurred on June 25 inside the law college premises, where the student was allegedly raped in the security guard’s room. The Kolkata police arrested four people, including the main accused Manojit Mondal, a former student-turned-Trinamool Congress’s student wing leader and two other students.
Manojit’s political links gave the case a sharp political turn, with BJP, CPM and Congress accusing the ruling party of shielding its student leaders and fostering a culture of impunity.
Alongside Manojit, two students — Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — were arrested for allegedly aiding in the crime. The college’s security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was also taken into custody. While the three accused students remain in judicial custody, the court has recently granted bail to Banerjee.
