The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port authorities have decided to address the issue of riverbank erosion along the Hooghly River in Kolkata, with support from IIT Kharagpur.

The decision comes as the river's expansion threatens to encroach on land and damage heritage structures near the riverbanks.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had earlier identified vulnerable spots along the riverbank, including Nimtala Ghat, Ratan Babu Ghat, Ahiritola Ghat, and the area beneath Millennium Park, where significant erosion has occurred.

These findings were shared with the port authorities, who confirmed that they had already engaged an IIT Kharagpur team to study the situation.

State minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim stated that the study would guide the port authorities in starting shore protection work. He described a recent meeting with the port authorities as "very positive" and expressed hope that the work would begin soon.

A port official noted that the first phase of work would focus on the Jorabagan area, starting with Nimtala Ghat. The project will be carried out based on the IIT team's recommendations, once their report is submitted.
