Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta paid his respects at the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi on Monday and expressed hope about surge in tourism numbers in the UT.

After offering prayers at the shrine on his birthday, Gupta said tourism in Ladakh would witness steady growth in the coming days. He said, “Ladakh is poised to become a year-round tourism destination, benefiting all sections of society.”

Answering a question on the administration’s efforts of promoting tourism, Gupta said efforts are being taken to ensure that the UT attracts enough tourists to support the local population and also contribute to the overall growth of the region.

“Earlier, Ladakh remained cut off from the rest of the country for six months. However, we are now focusing on promoting winter games and winter tourism.  The region is set to host all-India-level winter games this season,” he added.

While drawing references from the internationally renowned Gulmarg, Gupta said, “Just like Gulmarg sees heavy tourist arrival during winter games, we are developing similar facilities in Ladakh.”

He also provided updates on ongoing construction projects, including the strategically important Zojila tunnel being developed to provide an alternative route for the Amarnath Yatra.

When asked about the employment in Ladakh, Gupta replied, “The UT has around 18,000 government employees, and recruitment for an additional 3,000 vacancies has already been finalised, with appointments expected soon,” he said.
