Efforts are underway on a war footing to clear debris from roads near Bhanrepani on the Badrinath National Highway, which were blocked after a landslide struck the area on Thursday, the Chamoli Police said on Friday.
In a post today on social media platform X, the Chamoli Police wrote, “The road is blocked since yesterday due to a landslide near Bhanrepani on the Badrinath National Highway. The work of opening the road by machines is going on a war footing.”
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government said that 566 people have been safely evacuated from Dharali and Harsil in Uttarkashi district till noon today. These areas were badly affected by Tuesday’s flash floods.
Efforts are on to rescue nearly 300 more people still stranded in the area. The Indian Army is using dog squads, drones, and ground-penetrating radars to aid the search and rescue missions.
Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth is supervising the relief work. He held a review meeting with officers in Matli and gave instructions to speed up the operations.
On Thursday, ISRO confirmed it is using high-resolution Cartosat-2S satellite images to assess the damage. These images show submerged buildings, widespread debris, and changes in the river's path, which are key details that are helping rescue teams on the ground.
