Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday paid rich tributes to the brave warriors of the armed forces for their victory in the 1971 war on the occasion of Vijay Diwas.

In a post on social media platform X, Sinha wrote, “On Vijay Diwas, I salute the brave warriors of our Armed Forces for their decisive victory in the 1971 war. Their selflessness, sacrifice, and heroism continue to inspire generations. Heartfelt tributes to their unwavering spirit and commitment to the nation.”

The 1971 Indo-Pakistan war ended with India’s decisive victory, with approximately 95,000 troops of the Pakistani armed forces ending up being prisoners of war (POW).

After the defeat in this war, India divided Pakistan into two parts - Bangla-dominated eastern Pakistan, currently Bangladesh, and Western or modern-day Pakistan.

This remains the last full-fledged war fought between the two nations, following which Pakistan has never engaged the Indian army in conventional warfare.

Interestingly, this war took place at a time when India and Pakistan had not acquired nuclear weapons.

During the war, India approximately lost 3,900 army personnel, with over 9,800 wounded and around 96 missing.

Pakistan, on the other hand, suffered heavier losses, as reports indicate that they lost around 8,000 to 11,000 armed, with an additional 25,000 wounded in the war.
