Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor on Monday paid tribute to police martyrs on the occasion of police commemoration day, honouring their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
In his detailed message, LG Sinha said, "On Police Commemoration Day, we bow our heads in homage to the memory of all police martyrs and gratefully remember those brave police personnel who are selflessly serving to ensure the integrity of the nation and the safety of its citizens."
He acknowledged the role of the Jammu and Kashmir police, highlighting their role in maintaining the peace, security, and public order across the Union Territory.
Jammu and Kashmir police, besides handling the domestic issues, is actively involved in the counter-insurgency operations, making it one of the most decorated and distinct forces in the country. The force have lost over 1,600 personnel in the line of duty since 1989 when the militancy began in the UT.

The widely cited number comes from the Director General of Police (DGP) in October 2025, stating that 1,614 J&K policemen have been killed over the past three decades.
The number of casualties and sheer dedication towards duty have fetched J&K police one of the highest recognised police forces with the most gallantry medals in the country.
Martyrs range from low-ranking personnel and Special Police Officers (SPOs) up to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) level. This particular police force, unlike others in the country, is actively involved in tackling the foreign terrorism, multination Narco-terrorism issues prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir.
