Uttar Pradesh witnessed a tragic toll of 54 deaths in a single day due to lightning strikes, snake bites, and drowning incidents, according to the state's relief commissioner's office on Friday.
Most fatalities occurred between 7 pm on Wednesday and 7 pm on Thursday, primarily attributed to lightning strikes during severe weather on Wednesday.
Pratapgarh district reported the highest casualties, with 12 people succumbing to lightning strikes.
Sultanpur and Chandauli followed with seven and six deaths respectively from lightning strikes on the same day.
Fatalities also included four individuals each in Prayagraj and Fatehpur due to lightning strikes, with an additional two deaths reported in Hamirpur on
Wednesday.
The statement from the UP Relief Commissioner's office detailed other casualties: one person each lost their lives in lightning strikes in Unnao, Amethi, Etawah, Sonbhadra, Fatehpur, and further incidents in Pratapgarh and Fatehpur on subsequent days.
In tragic drowning incidents on Wednesday, nine lives were lost: three in Fatehpur and Pratapgarh each, two in Etah, and one in Banda.
Additionally, fatalities due to snake bites were reported in Amethi and Sonbhadra.
