Investigating agencies have discovered that the accused in the Delhi blast terror module were running a madrasa near Al Falah University. This fact was pointed out by locals in the area.
The under-construction building, located about 700 metres from the university, has now come under strict official scrutiny. It was being run by Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, also known as Musaib, and cleric Mohammad Ishtiyaq, both of whom have been detained for their alleged involvement with the terror module.
The land for the madrasa was bought for around Rs 14 lakh a year ago, and the power of attorney is in Ishtiyaq’s name. Around 22 children had been studying there before it was shut down after the arrests.
Local residents fear the accused may have used education as a front for terror activities. A board outside the madrasa reads “Madrasa Islamia Arabia Islahul Muslimeen” in English and Urdu.
Officials said the Revenue Department has also started a probe after the madrasa came under the scanner.
According to sources, Muzammil gave money to Ishtiyaq for construction. A basement with fans, mats and a submersible pump had been built. Items used for namaz were also found inside.
Residents said Ishtiyaq had been going door to door asking families to send children for “taleem”. However, after the cleric’s arrest, none of the 22 children returned.
Yusuf, a local man, said after the matter came to light, they learnt that the property cost around Rs 14 lakh and was funded by Muzammil. “We never imagined such highly educated people, even doctors, could be terrorists. We have stopped sending our son to the madrasa,” he said.
Another resident said the children knew nothing about any suspicious activity but added that the madrasa must be thoroughly investigated. “They could be running a terror module under the guise of education. The madrasa should be thoroughly investigated,” he further added.
Officials say multiple agencies are now probing different angles of the case.
