Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko was arrested on Saturday in connection with a narcotics case after presenting himself at the North Police Station in Kochi for questioning.
His arrest follows an incident earlier in the week when he allegedly fled a hotel during a raid conducted by the District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF).
Arriving at the station around 10 am, earlier than his scheduled appearance, Shine was taken into custody under Sections 27 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which pertain to drug consumption and conspiracy or abetment. He was later taken to Ernakulam District General Hospital for a mandatory medical check-up.
The interrogation, led by the Ernakulam Assistant Commissioner of Police, reportedly involved digital evidence, including phone records and financial transactions, that linked the actor to a suspected drug peddler named Sajeer from Fort Kochi.
The investigation intensified following a DANSAF operation at Hotel PGS Vedanta in Kaloor between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. During the operation, while searching for Sajeer, officers discovered Shine’s name in the hotel register and approached room 314.
Police claim that upon spotting the officers through the peephole, Shine jumped out of the third-floor window, landed on a lower rooftop, leapt into a swimming pool, ran through the hotel lobby, and escaped into the street. Shine later stated that he mistook the officers for assailants, prompting his escape.
Despite Shine’s denial of drug involvement, sources revealed that the police confronted him with call records and financial transactions indicating regular communication with the suspected dealer. When Shine allegedly refused to undergo further drug testing, police considered collecting hair and nail samples for toxicology analysis.
This is not the first time Shine has faced controversy. Actress Vincy Aloshious previously accused him of inappropriate behavior and suspected drug use on a film set. She alleged that during a rehearsal, he spat a white powdery substance onto a table, suggesting possible drug use.
Although Vincy later withdrew her complaint after it became public, citing a breach of trust and stating she never intended to harm Shine’s career or the film’s progress, the matter brought considerable scrutiny to the actor.
As the investigation unfolds, the case has garnered significant attention across Kerala's film industry and law enforcement, with more developments expected soon.
