Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to return to Kolkata and cancel the proposed anti-CAA rally in Siliguri.
It was learnt that CM Banerjee will attend an administrative review meeting and lead the mega rally on Wednesday to protest against the Central government’s decision to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
However, on Wednesday it was announced that the rally has been called off and the Chief Minister will only attend the administrative programme and then return to Kolkata.
While one does not know what prompted the TMC leadership to call off the anti-CAA rally in Siliguri, political analysts are of the view that the anti-CAA rally at Siliguri was crucial considering the deplorable results of the TMC in north Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Out of the eight Lok Sabha polls in North Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidates won in seven constituencies while Congress won in one constituency. TMC ended with a zero.
