West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday rejected exit poll projections suggesting a BJP majority in the Assembly elections, alleging that the surveys were “bought” and aimed at influencing public perception, while asserting that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would return to power with a decisive mandate.

Reacting after the second phase of polling concluded, Banerjee issued a video message dismissing the projections, which indicated the BJP could cross the majority mark in the 294-seat Assembly.

“What is being shown on television was circulated from the BJP’s office. Money was paid to ensure its broadcast, and the media was forced to comply,” she claimed.

Describing the exit polls as an attempt to demoralise TMC workers, Banerjee said the exercise was part of a broader strategy to shape public opinion and divert attention from key issues.

Expressing confidence in her party’s prospects, she said the TMC would secure more than 226 seats and could reach 230, ensuring a two-thirds majority in the Assembly.

Banerjee also praised voters and party workers for their participation despite adverse conditions, noting that people stood in long queues in extreme heat. She alleged that attempts to “suppress Bengal” had been countered through the democratic process.

At the same time, the Chief Minister criticised the conduct of central forces and sections of the police during polling. She alleged that TMC workers were targeted and prevented from functioning as polling agents in areas such as Bhatpara, Noapara and Jagaddal.

She further claimed that late-night search operations were carried out in her Bhawanipur constituency.

Banerjee also expressed condolences over the death of a voter in Udaynarayanpur. “I have no words to express my grief for the family of the individual who lost his life while trying to cast his vote,” she said.

Reiterating her position, the Chief Minister termed the exit polls baseless and pre-planned, maintaining that the TMC would return to power once again with a strong mandate when results are declared.
