A tragic incident occurred in Bhawnas village of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, where a man lost his life after falling from a temporary wooden bridge into a swollen river.
The victim, Puran Chand from Bhawnas, was returning home from Jarol on Tuesday evening when the accident happened.
Local residents said the incident happened in the Halen area, where an old wooden footbridge crosses a river that becomes dangerous during rains. Puran Chand slipped while trying to cross the temporary bridge and was swept away by the strong current. Villagers managed to pull him out of the water after he had drifted nearly 100 meters downstream, but he was declared dead on arrival at Janjehli hospital.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur said this was not an isolated incident. In the past month and a half, three to four people have lost their lives in similar accidents. He highlighted the serious negligence of the state authorities in providing safe crossings over rivers and streams, especially during the monsoon season.
Calling the death of Puran Chand “deeply saddening and painful”, the former CM urged the government to act immediately to avoid such incidents in future.
Residents have been demanding permanent bridges and better infrastructure for years. They warn that without proper action, more lives could be lost during the monsoon season.
