Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Friday that the case concerning the killing of six hostages from Jiribam has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further investigation.
Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, D. Krishnakumar, at Raj Bhavan in Imphal, Singh assured that while the NIA takes charge, the state government will continue to closely monitor the progress of the investigation.
Singh expressed deep concern over the recent attack at Borobekra in Jiribam district, where armed groups targeted a relief camp and a police station.
The attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, including rocket launchers, attempted to overrun the site, which houses around 115 displaced people.
In the ensuing firefight, the CRPF managed to curtail the casualties, but some innocent lives were tragically lost.
“We must appreciate the efforts of the CRPF in curbing further casualties,” Singh said, acknowledging the swift action that limited the damage. The CM vowed to ensure that the killing of the six hostages would not go unpunished and would be closely followed.
Singh also responded to recent political controversy, particularly a post by former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on X, which sparked heated discussions.
He accused the Congress of exacerbating the ongoing crisis by allowing illegal foreign groups into the state through a 2008 agreement signed during Chidambaram’s tenure. Singh assured that measures are being taken to prevent such groups from operating in Manipur.
