A three-year-old boy was killed and his father seriously injured after an unexploded bomb detonated in a village in Noney district of Manipur on Saturday morning, police said.

The incident occurred at Taolingpung village in Namkaolong Part-II under the jurisdiction of Khoupum Police Station when the explosive device, described as a remnant lathode bomb, suddenly went off while the victims were clearing bushes in their kitchen garden.

The child, identified as Kalaingam Pamei alias Makurang Pamei (3½), died on the spot due to the impact of the blast. He was the son of Thuankungam Pamei, a retired personnel of the Assam Rifles.

Police said the explosion occurred at around 8.30 am when the father and son were working within their residential compound. While clearing bushes in the garden, they accidentally struck the unexploded device, triggering the powerful blast.

The child succumbed immediately to the injuries caused by the explosion.

His father sustained grievous injuries in the incident. Eyewitnesses said the blast caused severe damage to both his legs below the knees.

The injured man was first taken to the Khoupum Primary Health Centre for initial treatment before being referred to a hospital in Imphal for advanced medical care due to the seriousness of his condition.

Following the incident, the body of the child was transported to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal for post-mortem examination after completion of necessary formalities.

Police have registered a case at Khoupum Police Station and launched an investigation into the explosion.

Security officials said the blast was likely caused by an unexploded remnant device that had remained buried in the area, though the exact origin of the bomb is yet to be determined.

Incidents involving unexploded ordnance occasionally occur in parts of Manipur due to the long history of insurgency and security operations in the state, posing risks to civilians who may unknowingly come across such devices.

Authorities have urged residents to immediately inform security forces if they notice any suspicious or unfamiliar objects while working in fields or residential areas.
