In a sweeping counter-insurgency drive, Manipur police arrested eight militants affiliated with the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) and rescued four persons, including three women, within the last 24 hours, officials confirmed on Monday.
The arrests are part of a broader crackdown over the past 48 hours, during which security forces detained a total of 20 extremists from multiple insurgent outfits across the state. The operations also led to the seizure of a significant cache of arms and ammunition from various districts.
Late Sunday night, a major raid was conducted in Heirok, located in Thoubal district, where seven hardcore members of the KCP (PWG) faction were apprehended. Another member of the same group was captured in a separate operation in Wangoi, Imphal West district.
Security personnel recovered a haul of weapons that included two INSAS rifles, an INSAS Light Machine Gun, a carbine, an MK-11 rifle, around 170 rounds of assorted ammunition, a radio handset, a two-wheeler, a car, multiple ID cards and other incriminating materials.
In another operation, four persons — three of them women — were rescued from illegal confinement in a residence in Langol Laimanai, under the Imphal Municipal Council. Three members of the group Amour of Manipur were arrested in connection with the case. The suspects allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from the victims in an elopement-related extortion attempt.
Meanwhile, police recovered 13 stolen or snatched vehicles during a special operation aimed at curbing the activities of anti-social elements.
Authorities have issued a public advisory urging citizens not to fall prey to rumors and to verify any suspicious information through the state’s dedicated rumour-free hotline operated by the central control room. Officials have also warned against the circulation of fake news or inflammatory posts on social media, stating that violators will face strict legal consequences.
The police have further appealed to the public to surrender any looted arms, ammunition, or explosives in their possession to the nearest police station or security forces without delay, emphasising the importance of public cooperation in restoring peace and order in the state.
