Tensions escalated across Manipur and neighbouring Assam on Saturday following the discovery of six bodies, believed to be those of hostages, in Jiribam district and while handling of bodies of alleged Kuki insurgents in a November 11 gunfight in Jiribam.

The bodies, including those of three women and three children, were found on Friday evening, triggering widespread protests and large-scale violence.

A curfew has been imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East, with unrest spreading to the Imphal Valley. Protesters targeted the residences of local Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), including Sapam Nishikant Singh and RK Imo, damaging property and calling for justice.

The six victims, who were allegedly abducted by militants, were found near a river in Jirimukh, a remote village on the Manipur-Assam border. Sources say the group had been taken hostage during a shootout between militants and security forces in Jiribam on Monday.

The bodies of the victims, believed to be from the Meitei community, were transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for post-mortem.

The discovery prompted a massive search operation that ended with the bodies being located on Friday evening.

In response to the escalating violence, the authorities imposed an internet shutdown for two days across seven districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.

Tensions also spiralled at SMCH in Assam, where nearly 400 people clashed with police over the handling of the bodies of 10 individuals from Manipur, who were killed in a gunfight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on 11 November.

The bodies had been transported to Assam for post-mortems.

Hundreds of people held a candlelight vigil in Aizawl, Mizoram, on Friday evening in solidarity with the victims from the Hmar-Mizo community in Jiribam.

Manipur has been reeling under ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities for over 18 months.

The violence, which initially began in the Imphal Valley and surrounding hills, spread to Jiribam after a farmer’s mutilated body was discovered in June.

Amid the chaos, the Centre has reimposed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas, including Jiribam, citing the continuing volatile situation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that the decision was made due to persistent ethnic violence, which has already claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands since May 3, 2023.
