A 25-year-old technician at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 46-year-old air hostess while she was undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The incident occurred on 6 April and came to light after the victim filed a police complaint on 14 April.
The accused, identified as Deepak Kumar, a native of Badhouli village in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, was employed at the hospital for the past five months. He had completed his Bachelor’s degree in Operation Theatre Technology from a private university and was assigned to handle medical equipment in the ICU.
Gurugram Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by DCP (Headquarters) Dr Arpit Jain.
The team undertook an exhaustive inquiry, reviewing footage from over 800 CCTV cameras and questioning more than 50 staff members, including doctors, nurses, and technicians.
“During the course of the investigation, we reviewed footage from more than 800 CCTV cameras installed throughout the hospital premises and questioned over 50 hospital staff members, such as doctors, nurses, and technicians. The probe was conducted from every possible angle, with timelines, duty rosters, and access logs carefully examined to identify inconsistencies and leads,” Dr Jain stated.
Eight dedicated teams were formed, involving officers including ACP Sadar Yashwant Yadav, ACP (Crime Against Women) Dr Kavita, Sadar SHO Inspector Sunil Kumar, Women’s Police Station (West) SHO Inspector Geeta, CIA Sector 40 in-charge Inspector Amit Kumar, and Investigating Officer ASI Sonika.
The woman, a flight attendant from West Bengal, had arrived in Gurugram on 31 March for airline training. She was admitted to Medanta Hospital on 5 April after falling ill following a swim at a hotel.
She alleged that while in a semi-conscious state the next day, she was sexually assaulted in the ICU by a man, despite the presence of two nurses in the room.
In her complaint, she recounted, “I could hear all the sounds and proceedings there. The man asked for the inventory from both nurses. The nurses started giving their details.”
“Then I heard the man asking the nurse about the size of my waistband, and he said that he would check it himself. In the meantime, I felt that the man had put his hand under the bedsheet from my right side,” she said, adding he digitally raped her.
Police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
He will be produced before a magistrate on Saturday and is expected to be taken into police remand for further interrogation. Investigators said further action will be taken based on forensic analysis and follow-up questioning.
