In a decisive victory, Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma, wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, emerged triumphant in the Gambegre bypoll, securing a robust margin of over 4,500 votes.
Her victory strengthens the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, bringing its tally to 32 in the 60-member House.
Chandee, representing the NPP, polled 12,679 votes, outstripping her closest competitor, Sadhiarani M. Sangma of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), who garnered 8,084 votes. The Congress candidate, Jingjang M. Marak, finished third with 7,695 votes.
The BJP’s Bernard N. Marak secured 710 votes, while independents Jerry A. Sangma and Sengkrabirth M. Marak managed 706 and 147 votes, respectively.
Following her victory, an elated Chandee remarked, “We were hopeful that we will win and that is what has happened.”
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma termed the result as anticipated, attributing it to the electorate’s desire for progress. “We are very happy that the people of Gambegre voted for development, and we are committed to that. I take this opportunity to thank the people of Gambegre,” he stated.
He further lauded the voters for their discernment, adding, “Voters are intelligent. They know what is good for them and how they should vote in every election. In this election, people have voted specifically for change in terms of the constituency and development.”
The Gambegre bypoll was necessitated following the demise of NPP MLA Samuel Sangma.
The win has bolstered the NPP’s position in the cabinet.
