Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has unveiled plans for a skywalk project at Mawkdok in the East Khasi Hills district, aiming to enhance tourism in the region.
Mawkdok, a prime tourist attraction along the Sohra tourism circuit, is famed for its breathtaking views of a lush valley flanked by verdant hills. The proposed skywalk, a flagship initiative of the state government, is expected to elevate the destination's appeal further.
"Tourism is a very important part of our overall strategy for the region. We are hopeful that the DoNER Ministry would continue to support the region to promote tourism," Sangma stated during the Cherry Blossom Festival on Friday evening.
The Chief Minister also highlighted Meghalaya's collaboration with Japan, terming the partnership "special" and instrumental in globalising the state's unique cultural heritage.
"The partnership with Japan will enable the world to learn about Meghalaya, its culture, and its close affinities with other Asian nations," he remarked.
The ongoing Cherry Blossom Festival in Meghalaya showcased a 'Japan Arena,' presenting Japan's cultural diversity, cuisine, music, and sports. The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Japan for their contribution.
Inaugurating the Japan Arena, Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia commended Meghalaya's vibrant culture and energetic populace.
"It is great to be here in Meghalaya and witness the energy and vibrancy of the people of Northeast. I am glad to see that Cherry Blossom Festival is taking on a new manifold proportion. Thank Japan for their close relationship with India," he said.
Scindia lauded Sangma's leadership in promoting the festival, adding, "I have not seen this level of energy in any concerts in India. Hats off to Conrad and the people of Meghalaya."
He further suggested Meghalaya aspire to be Asia's music capital.
The festival featured internationally acclaimed artists, including R&B star Akon and the legendary group Boney M, who delivered a mesmerising performance on Friday at Bhoirymbong in Ri-Bhoi district, enthralling the audience.
