In a significant milestone for Meghalaya's tourism development, the state has secured Rs. 198.5 crore under the "Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale" scheme for 2024-25.

Meghalaya is among the top five beneficiaries, with the Rs. 198.5 crore sanction being a remarkable achievement for the region. Notably, Meghalaya outpaced all other Northeastern states, as well as several larger states, with none receiving more than Rs. 100 crore, except Assam.

This sanction is part of a larger Rs. 3,295.76 crore allocated to 23 states across India under the challenge-based scheme, which aims to build world-class tourism infrastructure while promoting sustainable economic growth.

The funds will be used to support two key projects proposed by the state's Tourism Department: the redevelopment of Umiam Lake and the establishment of an iconic tourist destination at Mawkhanu, with Rs. 99.27 crore allocated for each project.

The Tourism Department submitted comprehensive proposals that align with sustainability principles and aim to boost the local economy, generate employment, and celebrate Meghalaya's rich cultural heritage.

Meghalaya, a scenic state in India, boasts an array of captivating tourist attractions, including picturesque waterfalls, serene lakes, fascinating caves, and rich wildlife sanctuaries. Among its highlights are:

  • Waterfalls: Nohkalikai Falls, Elephant Falls, Krang Suri Falls, and Nohsngithiang (Seven Sisters) Falls
  • Lakes: Umiam Lake
  • Caves: Mawsmai Cave
  • Wildlife Areas: Mawphlang Sacred Forest
  • Living Root Bridge: Double Decker Living Root Bridge
  • Rivers: Dawki River
  • Canyons: Laitlum Canyons
  • Museums: Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures
  • Neighborhoods: Police Bazar
  • Garo Hills: A haven for wildlife, home to species like the Hoolock gibbon, wild pachyderms, and elusive predators
  • Nokrek Biosphere Reserve: A vital ecosystem of national importance
  • Balpakram: An adventurer’s paradise, rich with myths and legends

These diverse attractions make Meghalaya a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Redevelopment of Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake, a cultural and ecological treasure of Meghalaya, is set to become a major tourist attraction.

The project will include a crafts village, arts and culture pavilion, botanical garden, amphitheater, and essential infrastructure such as roads and utilities. The redevelopment will be complemented by the introduction of the Western Bypass Highway to ease traffic congestion in Shillong and Sohra.

Currently drawing 16,222 visitors annually, Umiam is projected to attract 1,27,750 tourists post-development. The project is expected to generate 1,168 direct jobs and 2,675 indirect jobs, boosting the local economy. Further, luxury resorts, glamping sites, and eco-friendly design elements will enhance Umiam’s appeal to both leisure and business travellers, ensuring sustainable development.

Tourist destination at Mawkhanu

The Mawkhanu project aims to establish a vibrant, multifunctional space for cultural and community events.

Developments include a Meghalayan Experience Theme Park, Festival Ground and Amphitheater, and related amenities. It will also host major events such as the Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating local arts, music, and cultural heritage.

The project is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with the goal of redistributing tourist traffic from Shillong and attracting 2.5 lakh visitors annually. It is expected to generate 1,016 direct jobs and 2,327 indirect jobs.

Future public-private partnership (PPP) ventures, including an amusement park, convention centre, luxury accommodation, and golf course, will further enhance the area's appeal and economic sustainability.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed pride in the state's achievement:

“This sanction reaffirms Meghalaya’s commitment to creating world-class, sustainable tourism destinations. These projects will not only boost our economy but also preserve our rich cultural and ecological heritage for generations to come,” he said.
