Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district witnessed a mild earthquake on Tuesday afternoon, with a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor occurred at 1:07 pm at a depth of 5 km, with the epicentre located at latitude 31.22°N and longitude 78.22°E.
The NCS confirmed the event in a post on X, stating: “EQ of M: 3.2, On: 08/07/2025 13:07:05 IST, Lat: 31.22 N, Long: 78.22 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.”
So far, no reports of damage or injuries have been received. The authorities are monitoring the situation and more details are awaited.
Earlier in the day, Assam’s Karbi Anglong district also recorded an earthquake. The tremor, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, struck at 9:22 am at a depth of 25 km. The epicentre was pinpointed at latitude 26.51°N and longitude 93.15°E.
The NCS post read: “EQ of M: 4.1, On: 08/07/2025 09:22:19 IST, Lat: 26.51 N, Long: 93.15 E, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Karbi Anglong, Assam.”
Both tremors come amid a spell of monsoon activity in the region, though experts say such low-magnitude earthquakes are not uncommon in the Himalayan and northeastern zones, which are known for their seismic sensitivity. Stay tuned for updates as authorities continue to assess the impact.
