A 43-year-old man was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Kandi Khas area of Kupwara district, North Kashmir, late on Saturday night, officials reported on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Ghulam Rasool Magray, son of Ghulam Hassan Magray, was shot at his home before being rushed to a nearby hospital. He was later referred to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries. "The body will be handed over to his family after medico-legal formalities," an official confirmed.
This tragic incident comes just days after the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists, in South Kashmir. Tensions remain high in the region, as India and Pakistan exchange accusations in the aftermath of the attack.
Security forces have launched a massive crackdown in the Kashmir valley targeting the alleged "terror support structure." Over 2,000 people have been detained in connection with the investigation since the Pahalgam attack. In Srinagar, at least 63 homes have been raided, including that of a woman, in an effort to dismantle the alleged terror ecosystem.
A police spokesperson stated: “The actions aim to dismantle the terror ecosystem, including both overground and underground support, and take legal action against individuals engaged in anti-national and criminal activities.”
Further operations have been carried out in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, where police have detained 175 people for questioning. Intensified cordon-and-search operations, ambushes, patrolling, and the establishment of more mobile checkpoints have been implemented to ensure heightened security.
