A 23-year-old farmer from Punjab’s Ferozepur district, who had been missing for nine days, has been confirmed to be in the custody of Pakistani authorities.
The farmer, Amritpal Singh, is suspected to have inadvertently crossed the Zero Line near Rana Panjgrain village, which lies close to the India–Pakistan border.
Amritpal owns agricultural land in the area around Rana Panjgrain, some of which falls beyond the border fence maintained by the Border Security Force (BSF).
As per protocol, farmers with land across the fence must sign in and out at BSF posts when they go to tend to their fields. On June 21, Amritpal signed in as usual to go to his farmland but failed to sign out. When BSF personnel contacted his family to confirm whether he had returned home, they discovered he was missing.
Following this, the BSF reached out to the Pakistan Rangers, who later confirmed that Amritpal was in their custody. BSF officials are now in talks with their Pakistani counterparts to arrange for Amritpal’s safe return.
Meanwhile, the BSF has written to the Guru Harsahai police station to register an FIR in connection with the incident.
