Over 1.33 lakh rural households in Mizoram have been provided with tap water connections under the Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission, marking full coverage in rural areas of the state, the government informed the Assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply to a query from Lalchhandama Ralte, MLA of the Mizo National Front and Leader of the Opposition, Public Health Engineering Minister Lalnilawma said that a total of 1,33,060 households have been provided with functional tap water connections.
The minister said the achievement reflects a significant shift from the earlier dependence on traditional water sources to an organised piped water supply system covering rural areas across the state.
He also informed the Assembly that the government has established 28 laboratories to test water quality and ensure that drinking water supplied to households remains safe.
According to the minister, four of these laboratories have been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories to meet national standards for water testing.
The accredited facilities are located in Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai, and Kolasib, Lalnilawma said.
The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched by the Union government, aims to provide functional household tap connections to every rural household and improve access to safe drinking water across the country.
