Chaos erupted at Netaji (Kudghat) Metro station on Monday night after two women were reportedly molested and the accused was beaten by fellow passengers, who claimed to have caught him red-handed and slapped him with their shoes. The man was later handed over to the Railway Police Force (RPF).
According to eyewitnesses, the man had been inappropriately touching women on a crowded metro train travelling from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash. One of the women raised an objection at Rabindra Sarovar station, while another passenger complained of a similar incident at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) station. The man was allegedly caught by co-passengers when he attempted to repeat the act with another woman.
As the metro arrived at Kudghat station, the accused reportedly tried to flee, police said. However, passengers – including several agitated women – chased and apprehended him. A scuffle broke out, during which some female passengers reportedly beat the man with their shoes before RPF personnel intervened and brought the situation under control.
A written complaint was later submitted to the Railway Police on behalf of the affected female passengers. Based on the complaint, the man was taken into custody.
Several women passengers expressed concern over the increasing incidents of harassment in metro trains, especially during peak hours. They also raised questions about the effectiveness of the Railway Police in preventing such acts.
In response, the Railway Police said that regular surveillance was being conducted and swift action was taken whenever a complaint was lodged.
