Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, on Sunday said additional routes of the Pune Metro will be inaugurated in May and July, as the state government accelerates efforts to expand the city’s urban transport network.
Fadnavis made the announcement after inaugurating Metro Bhavan, the headquarters of the MahaMetro Pune Project, in Pune.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said the expansion of metro services is aimed at improving urban mobility and easing congestion in the fast-growing industrial and services hub.
“Maharashtra is the first state to formulate GCC (Global Capability Centres) policy and in such a situation mobility is very important. We are committed to making Pune congestion free by building metro rail lines. We are also planning underground tunnelling for uninterrupted mobility,” he said.
Fadnavis acknowledged that work on the metro rail project in the state’s second-largest city began later than expected, but said construction activity has gained momentum in recent years.

“In May and July, we will inaugurate more phases of Pune metro rail. We planned a network of 80 kilometres, work on 55 kilometres of which is now nearing completion,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, the Hinjewadi metro line is expected to begin operations in May, while another 11 kilometres of metro routes in the city are likely to be ready around the same time.
He also said there are plans to extend the metro network further to connect the upcoming Purandar airport, a move aimed at strengthening connectivity between Pune’s urban core and future aviation infrastructure.
Fadnavis added that the state government has drawn up an ambitious plan to develop a 200-kilometre metro rail network covering both Pune and the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal areas.
The expanded network, he said, is expected to significantly enhance mobility and support the city’s growing transport needs.
Highlighting public response to the project, the Chief Minister said the metro system has already been well received by residents.
“Punekars like the metro rail, since around 25,000 passengers use the system daily,” he said.
