The Madhya Pradesh government informed the state assembly on Monday that efforts are in full swing to fill vacant doctor positions across the state by October, aiming to strengthen the healthcare system.
The announcement came in response to concerns raised by BJP MLA Riti Pathak, who highlighted the acute shortage of medical professionals in Sidhi district.
She pointed out that the district hospital currently has only 12 specialist doctors against the sanctioned strength of 37, with six medical officer positions lying vacant. Pathak emphasised that Sidhi, which has a significant tribal population, requires urgent attention to improve healthcare services.
Expressing dissatisfaction, Pathak compared the situation in Sidhi with Rewa, the home district of Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla, where healthcare facilities are notably better. She urged the government to address the disparity and ensure equitable distribution of medical resources.
Senior Congress MLA Ajay Singh, who represents the Churhat constituency in Sidhi, supported Pathak’s concerns and called for immediate action.
During the Question Hour, Congress MLA Pratap Grewal intensified the debate, questioning the government over the findings of the 2024 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which highlighted the poor state of healthcare in Madhya Pradesh.
Grewal, who represents Sardarpur in Dhar district, alleged that several doctor positions remained unfilled across the state, affecting the delivery of essential medical services.
In response, Health Minister Rajendra Shukla assured the assembly that the recruitment process for doctors was already underway and the government was committed to filling the vacancies by October. He reiterated that improving healthcare infrastructure remains a top priority and listed several initiatives taken by the state to strengthen the sector.
