The incident in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday morning took a violent turn when a history-sheeter opened fire during a police search operation, injuring an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), who then retaliated in self-defense, leaving the accused wounded.
The confrontation occurred around 7 am and resulted in injuries to both ASI Anand Ahirwar, aged 45, and Qasim Khan, a notorious criminal with 23 cases registered against him. Both were immediately taken to hospitals for medical attention, Superintendent of Police Shruti Kirti Somvanshi confirmed while addressing the media.
According to the SP, Khan had recently been apprehended from Nagpur, and police teams were in the process of recovering arms and other illegal items he had concealed at multiple locations.
During a search operation at Marahar village under the jurisdiction of Dehat police station, Khan managed to seize a firearm and fired at ASI Ahirwar, hitting him in the left hand. Acting swiftly in self-defense, the ASI fired back, injuring Khan in the leg.
Following the exchange of gunfire, Ahirwar was rushed to a hospital in Jabalpur for treatment, while Khan was admitted to a medical facility in Sagar. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident while ensuring that all necessary legal proceedings are followed.
