Parliamentarians from six countries have once again expressed their support for the Tibetan people and their right to protect their religion, culture and identity.

The delegation comprised of Jitka Seitlová from the Czech Republic, Barbara Pocock from Australia, Vlado Mirosevic from Chile, Samantha Cazebonne from France, Greg Fleming from New Zealand and Virendra Lal from Fiji.

Speaking to the mediapersons, Czech MP Seitlová said their visit to McLeodganj, the home of the Dalai Lama, was meant to show continued global support for the Tibetan people. She said the Czech Republic understands the Tibetan struggle because of its own past under repression. She condemned reports of torture in Tibet and said visiting during the Dalai Lama’s 90th birth anniversary year was an honour, calling him a moral guide for the world.

Australian MP Barbara Pocock praised the cultural performances by Tibetan children during official events. She said Australia’s stand on human rights is firm, and it supports the right of Tibetans, both inside Tibet and in exile, to live without fear, pressure or intimidation.

Chilean MP Vlado Mirosevic recalled his meeting with the Dalai Lama, where the spiritual leader spoke about the Middle Way Approach and the need for dialogue with China.

Mirosevic said Chile has good diplomatic and trade ties with China and he does not want to disturb them, but believes peaceful dialogue is important for both sides.

French MP Samantha Cazebonne said her presence in the delegation was a strong show of support for the Tibetan cause and reaffirmed France’s commitment to Tibetans’ peaceful goals.

New Zealand MP Greg Fleming said Tibetans have the right to pass their culture to future generations and live freely in their homeland. He also said China should not interfere in choosing the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation.

Fijian MP Virendra Lal highlighted that language is a key part of identity. He said the world today urgently needs truth and fairness.

Earlier, the delegations attended a function marking the 36th anniversary of the Dalai Lama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. They also met the Dalai Lama and spoke with him about issues concerning the Tibetan community.
