Amid ongoing communal unrest in several areas of Murshidabad—including Jangipur, Suti, Dhulian, Shamsherganj, and Farakka—the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has on Saturday initiated a confidential organisational investigation to uncover the root causes of the violence and evaluate potential internal involvement.
A special TMC delegation has been quietly dispatched to the affected areas. “Their primary objectives are to coordinate efforts between the party and the administration to restore peace and to provide the top leadership with a clear, ground-level report on the situation,” said a TMC leader.
Unlike public interventions, this inquiry is being conducted maintaining high secrecy. The delegation is tasked with holding closed-door meetings with various party factions in each locality to assess whether any TMC leaders—directly or indirectly—played a role in the unrest, said a source within the organisation.
According to sources within the Murshidabad unit of the TMC, the top leadership became concerned after local leaders from different factions blamed each other for fuelling the violence. In light of this intra-party finger-pointing, the leadership felt an independent organisational assessment was necessary to arrive at the truth.
“The fact that one group is accusing the other in every conversation made it clear that a neutral perspective was needed,” said a senior district TMC leader, adding, “This probe will help the party high-command understand who played what role during the crisis.”
The delegation has been instructed to remain in constant coordination with local police and administrative officials, attend peace committee meetings, and ensure swift implementation of measures to calm tensions if urgent decisions are needed.
The representatives have also been told to avoid all media interactions and maintain low public visibility, as the party’s top leaders—including chief minister Mamata Banerjee—have deliberately refrained from making public statements on the matter until the facts are fully known.
The urgency of the investigation was amplified by the viral circulation of sensitive videos, including a speech by Dhulian Municipality Chairman Inzamamul Islam and CCTV footage of his presence in areas affected by violence. Names of senior TMC figures such as Shamsherganj MLA Amirul Islam and Farakka MLA Monirul Islam have also surfaced in connection with the turmoil.
Given these developments, the party leadership has taken the step of conducting its own parallel inquiry, independent of administrative efforts.
Once the situation stabilises, the delegation will return to Kolkata to submit a detailed internal report to the TMC’s top leadership. Party insiders believe the findings could have significant implications—not just for managing the current crisis, but also for addressing the deep-rooted factionalism within the Murshidabad district unit.
“This organisational investigation is a welcome step. Only a neutral, in-depth approach can reveal the full picture and help the party chart its course forward responsibly,” said a senior TMC leader in Kolkata.
