Five patients died on Thursday after being trapped in the smoke-filled ward, while a sixth victim passed away during treatment on Friday.

The death toll in the Muzaffarpur hospital fire tragedy has risen to seven, with another patient succumbing on Saturday, officials confirmed. Authorities have also suspended the registration of the private hospital where the incident occurred, citing serious lapses in safety and negligence.

The fire broke out late Wednesday night at Prasad Hospital, reportedly due to a short circuit, leading to heavy smoke engulfing the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Five patients died on Thursday after being trapped in the smoke-filled ward, while a sixth victim passed away during treatment on Friday.

A district official said that the latest victim, Anjani Kumar Singh, who had been rescued from the ICU, died on Saturday. Singh was a resident of Parri village in Muzaffarpur district.

Muzaffarpur District Public Relations Officer Pramod Kumar stated that the Civil Surgeon has ordered the immediate suspension of the hospital’s registration due to “disregard for safety standards and negligence” on the part of the management.

The hospital authorities have been directed to submit a detailed explanation along with relevant records and evidence within seven days.

Meanwhile, police have arrested three hospital staff members in connection with the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine accountability for the tragedy.

Earlier, Director General (Fire) Shobha Ahotkar had stated that all the deaths were caused due to asphyxiation, with no burn injuries reported among the victims.

The incident has raised serious concerns over fire safety compliance in private healthcare facilities, with authorities expected to initiate further action based on the findings of the investigation.
