The first-ever sighting of takins, also known as gnu goats, has mesmerised residents of Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh.
The discovery, made by the Indian Army near T Gompa in Tripe Heights, situated along the India-China border, has sparked excitement and wonder among the local community.
The initial spotting of these mystical creatures occurred last Friday in Taksang village, garnering awe and fascination.
Locally referred to as "kemya" in the Monpa language, the takins were observed near the sacred Chhamling Tso Lake, having strayed from their group.
A resident remarked, "It is believed that these takins come from the Bhutan side. This is the first time they have been captured on camera, adding to the excitement."
Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu, representing Zemithang, expressed her delight at the news, stating, "I am thrilled to learn of the presence of takins in our beautiful region. Their majestic appearance has left us in awe, and I believe this sighting brings blessings and good fortune to our community."
Lhamu elaborated the significance of such encounters, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the region. "Such encounters are rare and auspicious, reminding us of the diverse wildlife that surrounds us," she added.
Takins, well-known in Dibang Valley district and often studied by researchers worldwide, are referred to as Mishmi takins.
The recent sightings in Tawang district mark the first documentation of these animals in the area, adding to the ecological richness and diversity of the region.
