N Rangasamy was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for a landmark fifth term on Wednesday, with Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan administering the oath of office. A seasoned veteran of the Union Territory’s political landscape, the 75-year-old leader has now led the government twice under the Congress banner and three times as the head of the All India NR Congress (AINRC)—the party he founded in 2011 after parting ways with the Congress.
The ceremony, which saw the attendance of BJP National President Nitin Nabin, marks the continuation of the NDA’s influence in the region. In the recent Assembly elections, Rangasamy displayed his electoral muscle by contesting and winning from two separate constituencies, Thattanchavady and Mangalam. The power-sharing arrangement saw the AINRC field candidates in 16 of the 30 available seats, while its ally, the BJP, contested 10. The remaining four seats were split between the AIADMK and the LJK.
It should be noted that Puducherry continues to be one of the most special administrative regions since it is made up of the previously French regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. Thus, having been elected for the fifth time, Rangasamy becomes the most important political person of this Union Territory.
