The Andhra Pradesh government has cancelled a recent notification issued by the State Waqf Board. The notification had called for private parties to express interest in developing nearly 30,000 acres of Waqf land for commercial use. This move was halted following orders from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The Waqf Board’s notice, dated 3 April, invited individuals and organisations to propose development projects. The land in question ranged from one acre to 200 acres across the state. Proposed uses included petrol stations, shopping complexes, commercial buildings, and multiplexes. The deadline for submissions was set for 8 May.

However, after local media highlighted the notification, it caused concern among members of the Muslim community. Some leaders accused the Waqf Board of exploiting religious properties. Former MLA Shaik Mastan Vali said the board had no right to take such decisions without cabinet approval. He stated that all decisions about Waqf land must be reviewed by the state and ratified by the board.

In response, Chief Minister Naidu called a meeting with the minority welfare department. Officials told him the notification was issued without consulting the state government. Naidu then ordered its immediate withdrawal. He stressed that Waqf land should only be used for the welfare of the Muslim community.

Waqf Board Chairman Sheikh Abdul Aziz later clarified the board’s position. He said the notification was not meant to lease or sell the land. It was only to explore ways to generate income. He added that the board is currently short on funds, even for basic expenses like staff salaries and property maintenance.

Aziz also pointed out a major concern: of the 69,000 acres under the board, over 36,000 acres have been encroached upon. Only about 33,000 acres remain under its control. He said the current board is focused on protecting these lands and using them responsibly.

He assured that any future plans would be discussed with the state government. The aim, he said, is to raise funds for educational support, scholarships, and aid for poor Muslim families.

The issue has brought renewed focus on how Waqf properties are managed and the need for stronger oversight.
