The ruling National Conference government in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday vowed to reinstate the July 13, 1931, holiday as soon as possible. The holiday was dropped from the official calendar by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
The demand to reinstate the said holiday has grown, especially after the people elected a government in the region in 2024. The Kashmir political parties have demanded the reincorporation of the July 13 holiday in the calendar.
NC’s chief spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said his party has always paid tributes to martyrs of July 13 who sacrificed their lives standing up against the then ruler.
Sadiq informed reporters on the sidelines of a party function in Srinagar that, “As far as we are concerned, we have made a promise. We will definitely bring the holiday on the 13th of July and bring it as soon as possible.” He accused the LG administration of eroding the political identity of Jammu and Kashmir.
“This is why we keep saying that the return of statehood is crucial,” he added. “Only then can we rectify what has been destroyed in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. Tanvir added that the party has already submitted their formal request to the district magistrate of Srinagar for paying tributes to the July 13 martyrs in the downtown area of Srinagar.
“We only want to offer tributes and Fatiha for the martyrs. I think there should be no obstacle,” he said.
Raj Bhawan, which is responsible for law and order, should not have any reason to disallow them from paying tribute to martyrs, he added.
