A 21-year-old NEET aspirant was found dead at her residence in Urapakkam, near Chennai, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Devadharshini, had been preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for the past few years but was reportedly struggling with the pressure of repeated attempts.
According to the police, Devadharshini completed her Class 12 examinations in 2021 and had since been attempting to clear NEET.
Since 2023, she had been attending both online and offline coaching classes at a private institute in Anna Nagar.
Despite three previous attempts, she was unable to achieve the required cut-off and was preparing for her fourth attempt at the exam scheduled for May 2025.
On March 27, Devadharshini had attended her coaching classes as usual before returning home. According to her father, Selvaraj, she appeared to be in a low mood.

Encouraging her, he advised her to continue her preparations without fear. That evening, she assisted her father at their family-run bakery before leaving for home. However, when she failed to return, her parents became concerned.
Her mother, Devi, upon reaching home, discovered Devadharshini had hanged herself from the ceiling fan using a saree.
Neighbours rushed to help, and emergency medical services were alerted. However, medical personnel confirmed that she had passed away by the time they arrived.
The Kelambakkam police were informed and arrived at the scene. The body was subsequently sent to Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Following the completion of formalities, Devadharshini’s body was handed over to her family and taken to her native village in Tiruvannamalai district for the final rites.
