A 21-year-old student preparing for the NEET exam in Uttar Pradesh died by suicide on Friday, leaving behind a two-page note expressing regret for not being able to fulfil his parents’ dreams. The incident took place in a private hostel in Kanpur's Rawatpur area. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Aan, a resident of Rampur.
According to police, Aan had moved into the Hitkari Nagar-based hostel just three days prior to focus on his studies.
On Friday afternoon, his roommate Imdad Hasan, a student from Bareilly, asked him to accompany him for Friday prayers. Aan reportedly declined, saying he wished to stay back. When Imdad returned after the prayers, he found the door locked from the inside. After repeated calls went unanswered, fellow students peeped through a ventilator and saw Aan’s body hanging from the ceiling fan using a lungi (a garment).
The students immediately informed the Rawatpur police, who arrived at the scene along with a forensic team. The police forced open the door and then sent it for post-mortem examination.
A two-page suicide note was recovered from the room and has been seized for forensic analysis. In the note, Aan wrote: "Amma-Abbu, forgive me. I couldn’t fulfil your dreams. I am tired of my life. No one is responsible for my death. May my family stay happy; I will also be happy after death."
Additional Commissioner of Police, Kalyanpur, Ranjit, confirmed that the student’s family has been informed. "The body has been sent for autopsy, and further legal procedures are underway," he said.
