NHPC studies revival of Tripura’s Dumbur Hydroelectric plant

The NHPC’s recent study of the Dumbur hydroelectric project in Tripura has raised hopes for its revival. Damaged by September floods, the plant holds potential to boost renewable energy and provide a cost-efficient alternative to gas-based power in the state.

A six-member team from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) recently conducted a detailed study to assess the revival prospects of the Dumbur hydroelectric project in Tripura’s Gomati district, an official confirmed on Monday.

Commissioned in 1984, the hydroelectric plant suffered extensive damage during the unprecedented floods in September this year, leaving it defunct.

“As part of the revival plan, a six-member expert team of NHPC visited the Dumbur hydroelectric project recently. During the three-day visit, the team carried out a study on the pros and cons of the state’s lone hydroelectric project,” said Bishwajit Bose, Managing Director of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL).

The NHPC has been engaged as a consultant for the project, and its findings will be critical in shaping the plant’s future.

“We are waiting for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) from the NHPC on the revival plan of the hydroelectric project. Once the DPR is received, the government will take the final decision on how to revive the power plant with increased power generation capacity,” Bose added.

The Dumbur hydroelectric project holds strategic importance for Tripura, both economically and environmentally. Bose emphasised its potential to help the state meet its Renewable Power Obligation (RPO) by producing 15 MW of power daily.

Moreover, the plant offers a cost-effective alternative to gas-based power projects.

“The per unit cost of electricity stands at Rs 3.86 at Dumbur hydroelectric project, while it is around Rs 5.90 per unit in any gas-based power project in the northeastern state,” he said.

The revival of the plant is expected to bolster the state’s renewable energy capacity, significantly contributing to a sustainable and economically viable power infrastructure in the region.
