A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Mohali, Punjab, has sentenced nine people to prison for their involvement in a case related to smuggling explosives and weapons using drones.

The case was linked to designated terrorists Gurmeet Singh, also known as Bagga, and Ranjeet Singh, also known as Neeta, both associated with a banned organisation.

The court found the accused guilty under multiple laws, including the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. The convicted individuals are Akashdeep Singh, Balwant Singh, Balbir Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Maan Singh, Shubhdeep Singh, Sajanpreet Singh, Gurdev Singh, and Romandeep Singh.

Among them, Akashdeep Singh, Balwant Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Balbir Singh, Maan Singh, and Gurdev Singh were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined. The remaining three, Shubhdeep Singh, Sajanpreet Singh, and Romandeep Singh, received 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine.

The NIA investigation revealed that the accused played a key role in receiving and smuggling large amounts of weapons, explosives, communication devices, and counterfeit currency into India using drones.

These items were sent by Germany-based terrorist Bagga and Pakistan-based terrorist Neeta and were dropped at specific locations in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district between August and September 2019.

The investigation further showed that this smuggling operation was part of a larger conspiracy to launch terror attacks in Punjab. The aim was to create fear, threaten national security, and wage war against the Indian government.

This sentencing is a major step in India's efforts to crack down on cross-border smuggling linked to terrorism.
