The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted a detailed interrogation of a prisoner at the Presidency Jail in Kolkata, probing possible links to the Delhi Red Fort blast. The prisoner, identified as Sabir Ahmed, has been lodged in the correctional facility for the past three years on a narcotics case.
According to NIA sources, the interrogation was part of a larger investigation tracing the “money trail” suspected to be connected with the blast. Officials revealed a suspicious transaction of ₹10 lakh from Sabir’s bank account, prompting them to question him about possible associations with a larger criminal network or inter-state sabotage modules.
“Each suspect whose name has surfaced in the Delhi blast case is being questioned systematically. Sabir’s interrogation focused on uncovering any links to militant organisations or criminal groups involved in drug trafficking,” an NIA official said.
The agency also visited Sabir’s residence in Tehatta, Nadia district, recording statements from family members and bringing his brother, Faisal Ahmed, to Kolkata for questioning. Investigators are examining his past communications, mobile records, financial transactions, and contacts to determine whether the Red Fort explosion could be part of a wider sabotage plan orchestrated under the cover of criminal activities like drug smuggling and arms supply.
“The links between terrorism and drug smuggling are closely monitored. Some gangs carry out sabotage under the guise of criminal operations, and this may be one such instance,” the official added.
NIA sources said that some important information has emerged from the interrogation, which may provide a fresh lead in the ongoing investigation. Sabir may be questioned again in the coming days as authorities seek to uncover those behind the blast.
The incident at Delhi’s Red Fort continues to trigger nationwide concern. Investigators and state intelligence agencies are treating the interrogation at Kolkata’s correctional facility as a critical step toward identifying the masterminds behind the attack.
