In a surprising turn of events amid the 90th birthday celebrations of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted a raid at a local communication centre in McLeodganj. The owner, identified as Sunny, son of Ghindro Ram, is suspected of having ties with Khalistani elements operating in India and overseas.
According to sources, the raid was triggered by heightened security concerns linked to the presence of several high-profile dignitaries attending the Dalai Lama's birthday celebrations.
A senior police official in Dharamsala said the operation is believed to be connected to alleged terror financing activities supporting Khalistani groups.
Interestingly, McLeodganj police were not informed in advance. “We’re still trying to ascertain the details. It seems to be linked to serious security matters,” said McLeodganj SHO Deepak Kumar.
Sunny, who runs the communication centre close to the Dalai Lama’s temple, is reportedly married to a Russian national who has been residing with him in McLeodganj for several years.
At the time of filing this report, NIA officials were still present at both his home and workplace. They had seized documents, mobile phones, and computer hard drives for forensic analysis.
Investigators are also reviewing Sunny’s financial records and foreign exchange dealings, which reportedly raised red flags. His connections with individuals overseas—particularly those linked to Khalistani networks—are now under close scrutiny. NIA officials have seized some documents, hard drives and phones for further investigation.
