Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur on Saturday categorically refuted claims that the Directorate of School Education and other key directorates are being shifted from Shimla to Dharamshala. He stated that these reports are entirely unfounded and lack any basis in official policy or state government decisions.
Thakur clarified that Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had given clear and firm directions during a recent review meeting of the Education Department that the Directorate of School Education, along with other directorates, will not be moved from Shimla under any circumstances.
“There is no proposal or consideration whatsoever to relocate the Directorate of School Education, and such misleading reports are completely contrary to the state government’s policy,” Thakur asserted.
“Shimla will continue to serve as the administrative nucleus of the state, and the government is fully committed to safeguarding its status as the centre of all major departmental and governance-related activities,” he added.
Thakur urged the media and the public to avoid being swayed by speculative or unverified reports, emphasising the need to rely on official communication for accurate information.

He reiterated that the state government remains committed to administrative stability, good governance, and public service delivery, and that any decisions would be taken only after careful consideration of all factors.
The issue of administrative decentralisation has been a sensitive topic in Himachal Pradesh, where past attempts to shift administrative functions from the capital have sparked public protests and political backlash.
In March 2017, then Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh declared Dharamshala as the second capital of Himachal Pradesh, with the aim of bridging the developmental gap between the state's lower and upper regions.
While the move was largely symbolic, and there were assumptions about the possible relocation of some government offices from Shimla to Dharamshala, no major shifts ultimately took place.
