Northeast floods, landslides claim 46 lives, 9 lakh affected

Relentless monsoon rains have caused severe floods and landslides across Northeast India, affecting over 9 lakh people and claiming 46 lives. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Sikkim are among the worst hit, with large-scale rescue and relief operations underway to mitigate the disaster’s impact.

Over 9 lakh people across Northeast India are grappling with the aftermath of relentless monsoon rains, leading to floods and landslides that have claimed at least 46 lives. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Sikkim are among the worst affected, prompting large-scale rescue and relief operations.

 

Tourists airlifted from rain-hit Sikkim

 

Fifty-nine tourists stranded for nearly a week in North Sikkim were airlifted to safety on Thursday as rescue operations resumed after weather cleared. Two MI-17V5 helicopters evacuated the tourists from Chaten to Gangtok. Among them were two foreign nationals. The evacuees were part of a group of 109 tourists trapped in Lachung due to landslides and damaged roads. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport deployed buses to ferry the rescued to Siliguri in West Bengal.

 

The Taran Chu river’s bridges between Munshithang and Chaten were washed away by incessant rains, cutting off road access. A landslide on Sunday killed three Army personnel and left six missing at the Chaten military camp. Search efforts face difficulties due to bad weather and treacherous terrain. Engineers and communication teams have been deployed to restore essential services.

 

Assam floods worsen, nearly 7 lakh affected

 

Assam remains engulfed in floods affecting nearly seven lakh people across 21 districts.  The death toll in the first wave of the floods and landslides rose to 19, with two deaths reported on Wednesday. One person went missing in the Cachar district.

 

Nine major rivers, including the Brahmaputra at three places, were flowing above the danger level across the state, while River Barak was flowing above the danger mark in the Cachar district, and its tributaries were also showing a rising trend, with some rivers flowing above the red mark.

The current wave of floods has affected 1,494 villages in 66 revenue circles, the highest of 339 villages in Sribhumi, 189 in Nagaon, 166 in Cachar and 156 in Hailakandi districts.

 

Authorities have opened 405 relief camps sheltering over 41,000 displaced people. Floodwaters have damaged nearly 15,000 hectares of cropland. Over five lakh livestock have been affected. Infrastructure damage has been reported in several districts, including roads, bridges, schools, and power supplies.

 

Floods and landslides disrupt Arunachal Pradesh

 

Arunachal Pradesh has reported over 33,000 people affected across 24 districts by floods and landslides. Twelve deaths have been recorded this monsoon, with one person missing. Major rivers remain swollen, causing widespread damage to homes and livestock.

 

Floods and landslides have damaged 214 villages and destroyed nearly 500 houses. The state has reported hundreds of livestock deaths, including poultry. Districts such as East Kameng and Lower Subansiri have been worst affected.

 

Manipur floods ease but damage extensive

 

Manipur’s flood situation improved on Thursday as rainfall intensity dropped and river levels receded. However, over 1.65 lakh people have been affected, with more than 35,000 houses damaged since heavy rains began on May 31.

 

The Assam Rifles and Army continue evacuation under Operation Jalrahat-II. Over 4,000 people have been rescued and sheltered in relief camps. Floodwaters breached embankments along the Imphal, Kongba, and Nambul rivers. A man was recently swept away by floodwaters in Imphal West district.

 

Mizoram reports deaths 

 

Mizoram has reported five deaths over the past ten days due to landslides, house collapses, and other rain-related calamities, according to the state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department. Heavy monsoon showers continue to threaten lives and property.
