Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma visited the forward areas in Poonch district to assess the operational preparedness of troops deployed along the LoC for counter-insurgency purposes.

His visit follows the first-ever Union Territory-level security conference, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, which reviewed coordination and readiness among various security and intelligence agencies.

The Army commander stressed the need to remain vigilant and mission-ready for upcoming challenges by incorporating technology for operational readiness.

The Northern Command posted on X, “Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Army Commander Northern Command, visited Shahsitar, Surankote (Poonch), to assess the operational readiness of units deployed for counter-terrorism tasks.”

Sharma highlighted the role of technology in the missions, especially along the LoC, where dense forests, caves, rivers, mountain tops and dense vegetation create challenges for security forces in the counter-insurgency operations.

The Army commander also commended the troops for their professional excellence and adaptability, forged through rigorous and innovative training.

Earlier this week, LG Sinha, who oversees the security operation in Jammu and Kashmir, chaired the first-ever UT-level DGP-IGP-level security conference to assess the coordination among various security agencies.

At the conference, Sinha said every remaining terror element in the UT will be eliminated with synchronised and comprehensive anti-terror operations.

According to some varied estimates, there are “100-120 terrorists active” on both sides of the Pir Panjal ranges, with “60-70 more terrorists waiting to infiltrate the fence”.

Security forces have largely been successful in limiting the amount of terror-related violence in the Kashmir Valley, while occasional confrontations have been reported in the Jammu division throughout 2025.
